Russia might cooperate with Iran in construction of small nuclear power plants in Iran, said spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

Behrouz Kamalvandi discussed Russia's investment in construction project of second nuclear plant in Bushehr in an interview with Trend.

"The units can be produce domestically, while Russian side will provide the equipment," the spokesman said.

"Atomstroyexport (ASE) is the Russian Federation's nuclear power equipment and service exporter. It is a fully owned subsidiary of Rosatom. The Russian company is currently constructs nuclear plants in 12 foreign countries," Kamalvandi said.

"The USA imposed sanctions against the first plant in Bushehr, the security center and the company that provided radiopharmaceutical, but not everyone surrender to the US sanctions. Despite the US pressure, the Russians have not cut their cooperation with Iran," Kamalvandi said.

The official noted that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran plans to construct small nuclear power plants with production capacity of 100 megawatt.

"The scale of small plants is yet to be decided, and the project is at the research stage. "There are some challenges; we can not build all the plants by the sea, so the small power plants can be constructed in lands with no water," the spokesperson added.

"Iran is looking for a partner country to work with in this regard. We are considering the option whether we may cooperate with Russians in the construction of small plants," Kamalvandi said.
