BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 7

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

Shazand Oil Refinery, located in Iran's Central Province, will be able to manufacture needle coke within 3-4 years maximum, the Executive Director of Shazand Oil Refinery in Iran Gulamhossein Ramazanpour told Trend.

Needle coke, also called acicular coke, is a highly crystalline petroleum coke used in the production of electrodes for the steel and aluminium industries and is particularly valuable because the electrodes must be replaced regularly.

According to Ramazanpour, in this regard, a contract has been signed with IMIDRO recently.

Ramazanpour said that in the current Iranian year (starting March 21, 2019) less than 0.5 percent of sulfur oil, normal hexane and normal pentane products used in shipbuilding at the Shazand oil refinery in Iran are being manufactured.

Ramazanpour said that 250,000 barrels of oil are processed daily at Shazand refinery.

"Currently, the company produces about 600 tons of sulfur daily and this amount is available for sale," he said.

Iran's Shazand Oil Refinery began operations in 1993 with 150,000 barrels of oil per day. In 2003, the refinery's capacity was increased by 250,000 barrels. The company produces about 12 million liters of gasoline a day.
