Renewable energy generation will amount to nearly 3.15 billion kWh of electricity by the end of 2020, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Nurlan Nogayev said, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan’s prime minister.

Nogayev said that the renewable energy market is growing rapidly every year.

“A total of 2.4 billion kWh of green energy was generated in 2019 with an increase of 77.8 percent compared to the same period in 2018. The share of renewable energy in the total volume of Kazakhstan’s electricity production is 2.3 percent,” he said.

Nogayev also reminded that a total of 21 new renewable energy facilities were commissioned in the country in 2019.

“Nine more renewable energy facilities were commissioned over the course of 1Q2020. The total amount of attracted investments on renewable energy projects amounted to 103.4 billion tenge [$250.9 million],” the minister said.

The results of 1Q2020 show that the number of renewable energy facilities amounted to 99 with a total capacity of 1,361 MW.

By the end of 2020, the generation of renewable energy will amount to about 3.15 billion kWh of electricity, Nogayev said.

Based on preliminary estimates, country’s potential for solar energy production ranges from 3.9 to 5.4 billion WH per year, whereas the ‘ceiling’ of wind power is 920 billion kWh per year.

As of the end of 2019, 90 renewable energy sources' (RES) facilities of 1,050 MW of capacity were operating in Kazakhstan including 19 wind parks (283.8 MW), 31 solar parks (541.7 MW), 37 hydropower plants (222.2 MW) and three biopower plants.

This year, the number of RES facilities is planned to be increased from 90 to 108, with the total capacity of 1,655 MW this year.
