By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

US Agency for International Development (USAID) is continuing to provide support for energy sector development in Kazakhstan, including through implementation of USAID’s Power the Future (PTF) Project, a USAID representative told Trend.

The USAID official said that PTF has been launched in each country of Central Asia, following international best practices, to create effective enabling environments for private investments in renewable energy (RE) that will lead to lower electricity prices.

“PTF is also supporting the government’s policy and regulatory reforms for investment in RE and energy efficiency,” the representative said.

The USAID representative added that PTF supports Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and other key stakeholders in strategic power sector planning for high RE and energy efficiency scenarios.

Within PTF, national Least Cost Generation Plan (LCGP) was developed, which offers the long-term power system development scenarios for the next 20 years, with consideration of clean energy policies, he added.

"The project provided for targeted training for the government staff to strengthen their planning capacity in the power sector,” the representative said.

It was noted that PTF helps the Kazakh government staff to improve their understanding of RE impacts on the grid and strategies to mitigate these impacts.

“PTF identified gaps and assessed the needs for the improvement of RE forecasting and integration to grid. The project also provided recommendations on technical requirements for RE grid integration and RE equipment standards,” the representative said.

USAID is the lead US Government agency that works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.
