Number of drilled oil and gas wells in Iran announced

As many as 115 oil and gas wells were drilled in Iran in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), Managing Director of the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC), Abdollah Mousavi said, Trend reports citing the company’s website.

Mousavi emphasized that 112 of these wells were drilled onshore and 3 in offshore. In total, 26 development, 2 delineation, 4 exploration wells were drilled and 83 wells were repaired.

Mousavi added that the wells were drilled mainly in the territory of the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). Other oil and gas wells were drilled in the territories of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), the Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC), the Iranian Central Oil Fields Company, as well as, the exploration wells of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) were drilled.

The director noted that excavations with a total depth of 8,590 meters were carried out in the Iran-Iraq joint oil fields in the west of the Karun River, and 12 wells were drilled and improved.

“There are plans to maintain and increase extraction from 28 oil and gas reservoirs in Iran in the in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021 - March 20, 2022). Under these plans, the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) will carry out excavations in 9 oil and gas fields,” he said.

Iran has 125 oil fields and 59 gas fields. The country's total hydrocarbon reserves are estimated at 836 billion barrels. With available technology and equipment, Iran can extract 239 billion barrels. Thus, 29 percent of the country's hydrocarbon reserves are recoverable, while 71 percent remain underground.
