Azerbaijan, Iran to make great progress in water, electricity sectors co-op - ambassador

Great progress will be made in Azerbaijan and Iran cooperating in water and electricity sectors within the next 1-2 years, Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi told Trend.

The ambassador noted that recently, celebration was organized between Iran and Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the use of water reservoirs (Araz and Mil-Mughan) on the Araz River. The Azerbaijani and Iranian energy ministers attended the event. A number of good agreements were reached between the two countries.

Mousavi added that furthermore, agreements were reached on the use of the Giz Galasi and Khudafarin water reservoirs. Work is also underway to build several power plants.

“There are certain tensions between many countries in the world over water resources. Fortunately, there are no problems in the field of water resources between Azerbaijan and Iran,” said the ambassador.

As reported, on May 31, 2021, Azerbaijan and Iran held a jubilee ceremony on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the joint use of the Araz and Mil-Mughan water reservoirs on the Araz River.

The Khudafarin hydro junction is located on the Araz River, 196 km from the Araz water reservoir. A 200-megawatt-hour hydroelectric power plant is being built at the Khudafarin hydro junction, and the Khudafarin water reservoir has a capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters.

The Giz Galasi hydro junction is located on the Araz River, 12 km below the Khudafarin hydro junction. An 80-megawatt-hour hydroelectric power station will be built at the Giz Galasi hydro junction, and the Giz Galasi reservoir has a capacity of 62 million cubic meters.
