BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 7. Iran intends to turn the Persian Gulf and Asaluyeh located on the coast of this Gulf into a gas hub in cooperation with Russia, Turkmenistan and Qatar, Iran's Oil Minister Javad Owji told reporters after the meeting of the Cabinet of Iran in Tehran, Trend reports.
Owji said that the Iranian Oil Ministry is taking preliminary steps regarding the planned gas hub and preparing the necessary program.
The minister added that Iran has a strong gas transportation network. This allows the implementation of big plans.
According to him, Iran has more than 33 trillion cubic meters of extractable gas reserves. Iran ranks second in the world in terms of gas reserves.
Owji also pointed out that Iran prioritizes increasing energy trade with neighboring countries in the region. In this direction, import, swap and export of gas are also being focused.
Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is currently more than 1 billion cubic meters.
Recently, Iran's Oil Minister, Javad Owji said in a statement that Iran plans to increase gas trade by holding discussions and signing contracts and agreements with neighboring countries, including Turkmenistan.
Owji noted that Iran will soon sign a contract with Turkmenistan on gas imports from this country. Under the contract, 10 million cubic meters of gas will be imported from Turkmenistan daily as of this month (May 21 through June 21, 2023).
