BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 17. The share of Azerbaijan accounts for only 0.15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the global indicator, Trend reports via the Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the country's Ministry of Energy Javid Abdullayev.

"Despite this, our country has set ambitious goals to reduce emissions. According to scenarios, in order to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees, we plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030 compared to the 1990 level and to bring this figure to 40 percent by 2050," he said.

Countries are joining forces and engaging in global cooperation to combat the consequences of climate change, the official explained.

The head of AREA also mentioned that Azerbaijan relies on environmentally friendly technologies, as well as'smart' and 'green' approaches, in implementing large-scale post-conflict reconstruction projects in Karabakh.

"The economic regions of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur will become carbon-neutral by 2050 through innovative approaches such as the creation of green energy, sustainable agriculture, environmentally friendly transport,'smart' cities and villages, as well as the restoration of forests on thousands of hectares. The transformation of this area is set as a major goal," he added.

Abdullayev participated in a roundtable discussion organized at the editorial office of the "Khalg" newspaper on the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku.

The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was officially announced in Dubai on December 11, 2023.
