BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 4. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) will use Romania's experience in the exploration and drilling of geothermal wells, an informed source told Trend.
"Romania is among the five European countries with high potential for geothermal energy and is actively developing it. SOCAR specialists have been closely familiarized with the work on the discovery and use of geothermal sources in Romania itself, and Romanian experience will be useful for SOCAR's upcoming work in southern Azerbaijan as well," the source noted.
Romania has been working on 24 geothermal sites on its territory since 2023.
The Romanian Energy Minister visited Baku on April 1 with a large delegation, which held talks at SOCAR on a wide range of possible cooperation.
Director General of SOCAR AQS (SOCAR's drilling structure), Samir Mollayev, told Trend earlier that SOCAR AQS may drill geothermal wells in Azerbaijan for the first time - in the Kalbajar region and in Nakhchivan.
To note, Azerbaijan has many thermal springs, particularly in the mountains of the Lesser and Greater Caucasus, the Absheron Peninsula, Lankaran, Karabakh, and Nakhchivan, and their utilization is aligned with the Azerbaijani government's strategy to create a green economy.
SOCAR is actively implementing green projects and fulfilling its environmental obligations.
The World Bank is also interested in the development of Azerbaijan's geothermal potential and is preparing an analysis in this area.
