“Use of nuclear power station is one of the ways to get electric energy, but it is difficult to say when Azerbaijan will have to build it,” Tayyar Ibrahimov, the head of the Production and Technical Department of the Azerenerji, told Trend.

He was commenting the statement of Adil Garibov, the head of the NANA radiation problems institute, on the necessity of nuclear power station in the country.

Garibov said that the oil reserves of the country would be exhausted in 30-40 years. “Therefore, our country will have to use nuclear power sooner or later. The plan on construction of the nuclear power station existed in Azerbaijan already in 1970s and even its foundation was laid in the Salyan region,” he stressed.

Ibrahimov noted that the state program on development of fuel-energy complex for 2005-2015 envisaged study of the rationality of the construction of the nuclear power station. The idea will be scrutinized and analyzed in different levels.

As to the impact of the station on environment and population, the head of the department stressed that the production was safety with competent and professional management. “Nuclear power stations are widely used all over the world. In France 80% of output fell to the nuclear power stations. Meanwhile, Iran plans to build 20 new nuclear power stations,” he added.
