BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as well as Azerbaijan, prioritize financing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, President of COP29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev told Trend.
According to him, financing efforts to reduce carbon dioxide and methane emissions is one of the top goals both worldwide under COP29 and in Azerbaijan's unique state plans.
“Within the framework of COP28 in December 2023 in Dubai, the problem of reducing greenhouse gas emissions was a separate big topic. The countries of the world continue relevant discussions, and our negotiating group will also participate in these discussions and decision-making,” Babayev said.
He pointed out that reducing methane emissions is very important for Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan has joined the global initiative to reduce methane emissions and will take steps both at the state level and for companies operating in the country,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, the largest methane emissions occur in the oil and gas and agricultural sectors.
Azerbaijan is hosting COP29 in November. This decision was adopted at last year's COP28 plenary conference in Dubai on December 11. Baku will become the world's hub, welcoming between 70 and 80,000 foreign visitors.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
