RCC reviews radio frequencies

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 26 / Trend H. Valiyev /

A technical working group is evaluating the use of medium- and long-range radio frequencies and simultaneous audio broadcast networks in Regional Commonwealth of Communications (RCC) member countries.

The group will define the necessary criteria for designating synchronous network frequencies, Chief Engineer of the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry's State Radio Frequency Administration Ilham Efendiyev told Trend today.

Efendiyev said the work group is studying the 549 kHz, 873 kHz and 171 kHz frequencies. These frequencies should be coordinated to ensure that the transmitters in one country do not interfere with the frequencies in neighboring countries.

No regional programs or guidelines exist today to ensure that countries can simultaneously use these frequencies without interfering with their neighbors. Each country uses them at its own discretion. This creates technical problems, the RCC reported.

The working group is developing the necessary criteria and technical parameters to resolve this issue.

Each medium- and long-wave band has its own broadcasting diagram depending on the antenna's direction. The transmitters in the diagram may interfere with each other. Reducing power transmission equipment, power lines and antennas is a feasible solution, Efendiyev said.

"The frequencies used in Azerbaijan may not be able to interfere with the frequencies used, let's say, in Belarus," he said. "But Belarusian medium and long waves may cause interference in Azerbaijan."

After studying existing problems, the group will pay special attention to the technical aspects of the issue and identify an action plan.

A list of countries using the medium- and long-wave range was compiled at the group's second meeting last week in Kiev. Although some countries do not yet use this range, they may plan to in the future as they make the move to digital radio, the RCC said.

The medium- and long-wave range in Azerbaijan is used on the 891 kHz frequency in Baku and the 1,296 kHz frequency in Pirsaat.

All post-Soviet countries have equal rights to use 549 kHz, 873 kHz and 171 kHz frequency resources. These resources were registered by the International Telecommunications Union.
