Kazakhstan's Almaty airport increases cargo transportation

Kazakhstan’s Almaty International Airport has served 1.2 million passengers in 1Q2020, which is 1 percent more than in 1Q2019, Trend reports with reference to the press office of the airport.

The passenger traffic on domestic flights amounted to 705,585 people, which is 17 percent more than in 1Q2019, whereas the passenger traffic on international routes amounted to 583,709 people, which is 14 percent less than in 1Q2019.

In turn, the cargo transport service has received and handled 15,824 tons of cargo in 1Q2020, which is 7 percent more than in 1Q2019.

The report also said that the total number of flights operated by the airport was 12,999 flights over the period of first three months of 2020, which is 8 percent less than in 1Q2019 (14,134 flights).

In order to prevent coronavirus spreading in Kazakhstan, the number of flights was reduced by 438 flights per week on international destinations on 97 routes, which makes up 99 percent of all international flights implemented.

Additionally, all domestic flights have been cancelled and currently no regular air services operate in the country.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Kazakhstan has reached 2,835. The first two cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Kazakhstan among those who arrived in Almaty city from Germany on March 13, 2020.
