Kazakhstan’s KAZ Minerals eyes to build icebreaker for Baimskaya project

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 14

By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

Kazakhstan’s KAZ Minerals may construct an icebreaker in cooperation with Rosatom JSC for the Baimskaya project, Trend reports citing Russian media.

The report said that the companies are planning to discuss possible construction of one icebreaker and three bulk carriers. The construction of these ship is expected to help avoid the lack of available ships when the cargo transit on the Northern Sea Route increases.

Earlier this month, Russia’s Atomflot and Baimskaya LLC, which is controlled by Kazakhstan’s KAZ Minerals, signed a preliminary agreement on the supply of electricity for the operation of the Baimskaya mining and processing plant.

GDK Baimskaya LLC is developing the large Peschanka copper deposit, which is situated in the Baimskaya licensed area of Russia’s Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

It is estimated that the deposit contains 9.9 million tonnes of copper with an average grade of 0.39 percent and 16.6 million ounces of gold with an average grade of 0.21 g/t. Both estimates have been recorded in accordance with the JORC code. The project’s construction budget is estimated at $8 billion.
