Kazakh leader's son-in-law on trial for kidnapping

The trial of the Kazakh President's former son-in-law has opened in the city of Almaty. Rakhat Aliev is accused of being a part of a group that abducted two executives of one of the largest banks in Kazakhstan, Nurbank, a bank he controlled.

The fate of the kidnapped men is still unknown.

The accused are being tried in their absence after they've fled to Austria.

Rakhat Aliev, former Kazakh Ambassador to Austria had been under arrest in Vienna. However, in August a court in Austria refused to extradite him to Kazakhstan.

Aliev is also accused of theft, forgery of documents and a number of other offences.

He was married to Nursultan Nazarbayev's eldest daughter, Dariga. ( RT )
