BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, September 20. The Ministry of Agriculture in Kyrgyzstan has suggested the temporary suspension of the grain of food wheat and wheat flour exports from Kyrgyzstan to countries that are not part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Trend reports.
This proposed ban is intended to last for six months and will include all grain exports, except for re-export, transit, and humanitarian aid.
The government has presented a corresponding proposal for public discussion. This initiative has been designed to enhance the country's food security and maintain stability in market prices for food wheat and wheat flour. It was emphasized that a shortage of grain in the market could potentially result in a food crisis.
At the same time, during the first seven months of the current year, Kyrgyzstan increased its wheat imports. According to the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, a total of 181,200 tons of wheat were imported by Kyrgyzstan from January through July 2023, which is an increase of 1.6 times compared to 109,500 tons imported in the same months of 2022.
Russia and Kazakhstan are the main wheat suppliers to Kyrgyzstan. The majority of the grains imported by these countries are wheat.
