Turkey ranks one of the leading places in Turkmenistan's foreign trade, a statistics report of the Strategic Planning and Economic Development Institute of Turkmenistan, published by the local press says.
The volume of Turkmen-Turkish trade turnover in January-November 2011 grew by 20 percent to $3.2 billion compared to same period of 2010. Import of goods from Turkey is widely diversified and mainly represented by industrial goods.
Energy resources, as well as livestock products prevail in the Turkmen exports to Turkey. It is important for Turkmenistan to expand the range of exports to Turkey and increase its volume.
The intergovernmental Turkmen-Turkish commission for economic cooperation established in 2008 plays an important role in cooperation between the two countries.
More than 600 Turkish companies operating in the priority areas of economy, trade and investment, construction, energy, textile and processing industries are registered in Turkmenistan.
Turkish companies implement more than 1,270 investment projects, including over 1,200 projects - worth over $15 billion and 26 projects - worth over 2 billion euro and 26 projects - worth over 56 billion manat.
Turkey has extensive experience in international tourism, which is interesting for Turkmenistan actively developing its tourist infrastructure. In particular, Turkish companies contribute to the development of the national tourist zone Avaza.
"Given the characteristics of the geopolitical and geo-economic position of the two countries, one of the most promising and mutually beneficial directions of cooperation is the transport and communications sphere, where Turkmenistan initiates and implements a number of major regional and international projects," the report says.
