According to the national electoral law, from July 5, 2012 the nomination of candidates for the Gengeshi (local government bodies) and deputies of the Mejlis (parliament) in two election districts begins, the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan said on Wednesday.
Earlier it was reported that the elections were scheduled for August 19. The matter is the election to Gengeshi. The total number of representative organs of popular power in the towns in etraps and villages will be 646. There will also be elections of deputies to the Majlis in two constituencies - N26 of the Kaahkin etrap (district) of the Ahal velayat (province) and N99 of Mary - to replace the retired parliamentarians.
In connection with this, the country set up 6100 polling districts for the election of members of the Gengeshi in areas of the cities in etraps, gengeshliks and in particular, the Ahal - 1049, Balkan - 407, Dashoguz - 1412, Lebap - 1446 and the Mary velayat - 1786.
Some 1779 polling stations were set up in districts and district election commissions of the cities in etraps, villages and gengeshliks were formed. Lists of voters were specified. The above mentioned election commissions include workers in various sectors of national economy, education and health, science and culture, nominated by public organisations and associations, as well as citizens' groups.
Upon completion of registration with the velayat (provincial) district election commissions, the campaign will start. Under current law, the electoral commission as well as the relevant local executive authorities and local authorities, heads of enterprises and institutions are entrusted with the organisation of sessions and meetings of candidates with voters.
