Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has met with Chairman of Ukrainian Interbudmontazh Construction Association Vladimir Petruk and raised the issue of the construction of a subway in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan TV said on Feb.5.
"Addressing the chairman of Interbudmontazh CA Petruk, the Turkmen president drew attention to the fact that Turkmenistan's capital is developing intensively, the population increases and in connection with this he ordered considering the issue of construction of a subway in Ashgabat, the TV said.
In response, the head of the Ukrainian company expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust and assured the Turkmen leader that this issue will be comprehensively studied in detail by leading experts, the TV said.
The issue of constructing a subway was raised in 2008 when the Ashgabat municipality invited companies from St. Petersburg.
All this is related to the fact that Ashgabat significantly increased its borders in 2013 to 375.54 square kilometers by attaching the Abadan and Rukhabad suburbs in accordance with the decision of Majlis (parliament).
Ashgabat is the largest administrative and political, transport, trade, scientific and cultural center of the country. Some 12 percent of the country's population lived there as of early 2012.
The world's largest gated Ferris wheel, the Alem cultural and entertainment center, and a huge eight-pointed star Oguzkhan decorating the capital's TV and Radio Center are included in the famous Guinness Book of Records, and are situated in Ashgabat.
Additionally, the Turkmen capital also stands out with the highest concentration of white marble buildings in the world and a unique fountain complex on the way to the airport.
