Latvia relies on Uzbekistan for cargo transit to Afghanistan

Defence Minister Artis Pabriks met with his Uzbek counterpart Kabul Berdiyev during a visit to Uzbekistan, the government source told Trend. They discussed the situation in Afghanistan and its impact on security in Central Asia.

Defence Minister Artis Pabriks met with his Uzbek counterpart Kabul Berdiyev during a visit to Uzbekistan, the government source told Trend. They discussed the situation in Afghanistan and its impact on security in Central Asia.

Mr Pabriks thanked Mr Berdiyev for cooperation in allowing the transit of non-military goods to Afghanistan and hoped for even closer cooperation in the future between the two countries in the field of logistics.

Mr Pabriks also expressed interest in the organisation of expert-level consultations between the Ministries of Defence of Latvia and Uzbekistan, to exchange views on the situation in Afghanistan.

They also discussed prospects of cooperation in military education, particularly the issues surrounding Uzbek servicemen to study in the Latvian National Defence Academy and the Baltic Defence College.

Mr Pabriks will hold talks with Uzbek Defence Minister Kabul Berdiyev, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Gulyamov Latif, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade Minister Elyor Ganiev during the five-day working visit to Uzbekistan.

Mr Pabriks will give a lecture on 'Afghanistan before 2014 and after' at the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.

Currently, the Latvian Embassy in Uzbekistan serves as the NATO contact embassy.
