TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, December 2. Between October 6 and December 1, 2023, the average wholesale price of tomatoes in Uzbekistan was 19,000 soums ($1.55) per kilogram, Trend reports.
Citing the data from the East Fruit international price monitoring network, the recorded figure represents a 4.8-fold rise over the 4,000 soums ($0.33) recorded prior to October 6.
As of December 1, 2023, the average wholesale price of tomatoes in Uzbekistan is almost 1.5 times higher than the same date last year and 1.7 times higher than the same date in 2021. Furthermore, current wholesale prices for these products are at the highest conceivable level in the last five years.
As to the source, the abrupt increase could be attributed to unresolved or partially resolved concerns with gas delivery to greenhouses during vegetable growing in August and September of 2023.
The data by Uzbekistan’s State Statistics Committee highlights that the country successfully exported a total of 1.5 million tons of fruits and vegetables, which is an increase of 2.4 percent, or 35,000 tons, compared to the same period in 2022.
