A 2000-2009 study of 63 countries points to Iran as the world's third largest gas user after the United States and Russia, the ISNA News Agency reported.

In 2009, Iran used 4.5 percent of the world's gas.

Although high gas use can signal a high industrial growth rate, the majority of Iran's consumption came from households.

Over the last 9 years, Iran's gas consumption has grown 200 percent, going from 63 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2000 to 132 bcm in 2009.

The United States, the world's biggest gas consumer, has decreased its gas consumption from 661 bcm to 647 bcm.

Canada, China, Japan, Britain, and Germany are next in line for gas consumption.
