Ambassador: Iran’s role in defeating hegemonic system

Iran's Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad Reza Raouf-Sheibani says Iran plays a leading role in defeating the world's hegemonic system, Press TV reported.

"This is the reason behind the US and Zionist regime's (Israel) pressure on Iran," IRNA quoted Sheibani as saying on Tuesday.

He added that the Western pressure on Iran has failed to bear fruit and emphasized that Tehran would proceed on the path of progress and development.

The Iranian diplomat also pointed out that such pressures will never impede Iran's progress.

The US and the European Union have imposed a series of financial and oil sanctions against Iran since the beginning of 2012, based on allegations that the country's nuclear energy program may have a military aspect.

EU foreign ministers approved new sanctions on Iran's oil and financial sectors on January 23, which aim to prevent member states from buying Iranian crude or doing business with its central bank. The sanctions will be fully enforced as of July 1.

"In the past [Iranian] year, the region witnessed various developments which left broad and deep impacts on political and international situations," the Iranian ambassador stated.

Sheibani further noted that the spread of Islamic Awakening in the region, which was inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, was the primary outcome of such developments.

He added that the regional developments undermined the hegemonic system and led to the further isolation of Israel, which have in turn boosted Iran's might.
