SCO begins Iran's full membership process - MFA

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep. 18

Trend:

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the membership process of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Trend reports citing IRNA.

“The legal, technical, and administrative stages of Iran`s full membership in SCO began,” the MFA said in a statement issued after the SCO summit.

Iran's permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was approved on Friday during the multilateral alliance's ongoing summit in Tajikistan.

According to the MFA statement, which coincided with the presence of President Ebrahim Raisi in Tajikistan, all six main member states of SCO agreed to apply for permanent membership of Iran in SCO, MFA said in the statement.

Thanked the SCO member countries for Iran's accession to the Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, the MFA called it an important step in developing cooperation with the members of the SCO in all bilateral, regional and multilateral dimensions.

The discussion on Iran's full membership of the SCO got push last month after Iran’s top security official Ali Shamkhani following a phone call with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev said Iran will soon join the SCO, suggesting Russia’s support.
