Smoke forces evacuation of Kuwait Towers
Visitors and working staff on the Kuwait Towers were evacuated Friday as smoke billowed from one of the three structures, the Fire Service Directorate said, Xinhua reported.
Firefighters rushing to the site have already controlled the smoke in the water tower, the official KUNA news agency reported at 10:13 p.m. local time (1913 GMT).
An official said the accident was not serious as the smoke was not dense and the electricity short-circuit was believed to be behind the incident.
A Xinhua correspondent saw power supplies to the landmark complex and its adjacent areas were still off till 10:40 p.m. local time (1940 GMT).
The Kuwait Towers, an icon of the emirate, are located on the waterfront. They opened to the public in 1979 and underwent major repairs after neighboring Iraq's 1990 invasion.
