Kazakhstan, Astana, Nov. 3 / Trend K. Konyrova /
Kazakhstan proposes announcing 2010 the International Year of Bringing Together Cultures and Religions. The initiative was sounded at a meeting between Kazakh Parliamentary Vice Speaker Mukhambet Kopeyev and Muslim World League Secretary General Abdullah bin Abdul Mohsin Al-Turki in Mecca this week, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ilyas Omarov said.
Al-Turki said Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's initiative to promote tolerance and respect among adherents to world religions is consistent with the principles of the Muslim World League. He stressed the importance of working together with Saudi Arabia to implement the initiative. According to Al-Turki, as respected members of the international community, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia should work together in such undertakings, Omarov added.
Kopeyev proposed holding an international conference with the participation of religious figures and muftis from CIS countries to develop and announce the initiative.
