At least 259 people were killed in Iraq in January, the highest monthly death toll in four months, official statistics released Tuesday showed.
Government statistics cited by broadcaster al-Arabiya showed that over half of those killed were civilians, with the rest about evenly split between the military and police forces, DPA reported.
It was the highest death toll since September, when 273 people died.
The rising violence came after Iraq broke a nine-month political impasse and formed a new government in December.
