Egypt's opposition calls more protests for Friday

Egypt's opposition movements said Wednesday they will go ahead with a planned "day of departure" on Friday, calling for the immediate resignation of President Hosny Mubarak, DPA reported.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Mahdi Akif, the former leader of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, insisted that Mubarak take concrete steps fast, and step down.

"He has to do something real," Akif told broadcaster al-Arabiya. He said the draconian Emergency Laws must be lifted and the parliament, dominated by Mubarak's National Democratic Party, be dissolved.

"The people do not want Mubarak," he said.

In central Cairo, there were simultaneous pro- and anti-government protests.
