The Syrian embassy in Canberra was trashed and demonstrators marched Sunday in Sydney to protest vetoes by Russia and China of a UN Security Council resolution urging President Bashar al-Assad to stand down.

The embassy was one of several attacked around the world, dpa reported.

Local media said around 40 men stormed the building on Saturday, smashing everything in sight and forcing three diplomats to take shelter in the basement.

Syrian diplomatic missions in London, Berlin, Cairo and Kuwait were attacked in apparent reprisals for the deaths of civilians at the hands of government troops in Syria.

Around 150 mostly Syrian-Australians marched in Sydney condemning the violence in their homeland and deploring the vetoes in the Security Council.
