Syrian President Bashshar al-Assad said the deterioration of the Turkey-Israel relations will negatively impact the region, CNN Turk reported.

"If Turkey-Israel relations do not improve, then it will be difficult for Turkey to take part in resolving regional problems," Al-Assad said at a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapotero in Madrid.

The deterioration of Turkish-Israeli relations will affect the entire Middle East, he said.

Tensions between Turkey and Israel escalated following Israeli military attacks on the "Freedom of Flotilla" May 31. After the incident, Turkey recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv, and closed a military zone for Israeli fighters. Nine Turkish citizens died in the incident.

Following this attack, the Turkish parliament demanded that Prime Minister Recep Erdogan's government review its relations with Israel.

If Israel does not apologize for attacking the "Flotilla of Freedom," then Ankara will sever diplomatic ties with the country, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglusaid Monday.

Turkey has already announced that its airspace will be closed to Israeli military aircraft, and also canceled a joint naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea scheduled for August.

Al-Assad ruled out any progress in the negotiations with Israel without the return of the Golan Heights and Palestinian territories.
