Peace through music radio station shut down by Israeli police

Israel Materials 8 April 2008 04:34 (UTC +04:00)

(dpa) - Israeli authorities on Monday ordered the confiscation of equipment and the detention of several workers at the Jerusalem offices of RAM FM, an English-language radio station that targets both Israeli and Palestinian listeners.

Israeli police and the Ministry of Communications said that the station was broadcasting without a permit and was interfering with airport signals, Israel Radio reported.

The detained workers were being questioned and will apparently be held by police overnight.

The station said it was acting within the parameters of the law. RAM FM managed to stay on the air by using its Palestinian signal from Ramallah.

The South African-owned venture was founded more than a year ago, modeled on a station that was set up in the 1980s to bridge the gaps between whites and blacks in South Africa.

RAM FM says on its website that it "aims to promote bridge building and dialogue through contemporary music" as well as independent news broadcasts.
