(dpa) - For want of a key, a man tried to climb up a waste chute in an apartment building in the Swedish ski metropolis Are and had to be freed after he got stuck halfway into the chute, reports said Tuesday.

The man, in his 20s, managed to get his head and shoulders into the chute before the rest of his body got stuck into the chute opening, the online edition of the Ostersunds-Posten newspaper reported.

His sister, whom he was planning to visit, alerted the emergency services that had to use sledgehammers and other equipment to free him early Tuesday.

"I have been in the emergency services for 40 years and never experienced anything like this," rescue leader Bengt Larsson told the newspaper.

The rescue effort took 40 minutes. The man did not sustain any injuries in the ordeal in Are, 630 kilometres north-west of Stockholm.
