Israeli soldiers killed a senior Islamic Jihad militant and his roommate early Tuesday, in the first deadly shooting by the Israeli military in the West Bank in more than two months, medical officials said.

An Israeli army force surrounded a building in the northern West Bank city of Nablus to arrest Walid Juma'a, in his early 20s, who the Islamic Jihad said was one of its senior members, reported dpa.

The Israeli military said he was planning attacks against Israelis, was also a bomb-maker and had trained other militants.

An exchange of fire erupted when the force stormed the building, leaving Juma'a and his roommate dead. An Israeli military spokesman said the soldiers found ammunition and a Kalashnikov rifle in the flat.

The building near Najah University rents out apartments mainly to students, and the second Palestinian killed was a fourth-year student. He appeared not to be a member of the Islamic Jihad.

The university suspended classes for the day in mourning for the dead student.
