In what appeared to be a Syrian response to the US commando raid inside Syria, the Damascus government ordered Tuesday the closure of the American cultural center and the American school in Damascus, reported dpa.

"The Syrian Cabinet decided to close the American school and cultural center in Damascus", the Syrian news agency SANA reported.

Further details were not immediately available, but the move comes amid the controversy and outrage in Syria over the helicopter-borne US military raid on a remote border region village on Sunday in which the US said it killed an Iraqi militant. Syria's state-run media said eight civilians, including four children, were killed in the raid.
