Lebanese polling stations closed down on Sunday evening, ending 12 hours of tight contest between the ruling majority and the opposition to determine the next parliament, local New TV reported, Xinhua reported.
Lebanese voters cast their ballots in the crucial parliamentary elections and heated contest which recorded an average turnover of more than 48 percent, amid heavy security measures that succeeded to prevent major incidents during the election process.
Minor individual incidents and skirmishes during the long Election Day were quickly contained by the army and police troops which were deployed heavily across the country.
Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said Sunday afternoon that the security plan went in a positive way, and the positive aspects of the election process were numerous.
More than 200 international observers were active during the day to oversee the election process and guarantee transparency.
