The Red Cross has announced that it has set up a special online link to help thousands of Haitian people trying to get in touch with each other following the devastating earthquake there, Press TV reported.

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spokesperson in Geneva Anna Sachaaf told Press TV on Thursday that 2000 people have registered on the website over the past 24 hours.

The site has been set up to help the missing Haitian children and families struck by Tuesday's disaster.

Giving her general insight about the damage, Sachaaf said that there were still no exact figures on how many people were killed by Tuesday's magnitude-7 quake.

However she noted that death toll could run into several thousands.

Haitian government says the death toll from the tremor may surpass 100,000.

Laying out ICRC's top priorities, Sachaaf went on to say that the relief teams were working to pull survivors from the wreckage and make sure that the injured were being treated properly.

According to the spokesperson, the second phase of the relief operation would be to provide the survivors with water, medicines and other basic necessities that they will need in the coming days.

The ICRC says about 3 million people were affected by the earthquake that toppled buildings and damaged the presidential palace.

Tuesday's quake was the worst disaster to hit the Haitian homeland in two centuries.
