World champions Barcelona to elect new president
World champions Barcelona announced on Friday that their presidential elections will be held on Sunday June 13, dpa reported.
The date has been set by outgoing president Joan Laporta, who is stepping down after a successful but controversial seven-year reign at the club.
Laporta has backed current vice president Alfons Godall to be his successor though another vice president, Jaume Ferrer, has announced his candidacy, to the chagrin of Laporta.
According to online opinion polls, the favourite to win the elections is Sandro Rosell, who was Laporta's right-hand man until a bitter feud between them led to Rosell resigning as vice president in 2005.
