Overweight woman to return to US aboard military plane

A Haitian woman waited 11 days at the airport in the Dominican Republic's capital because no airline was prepared to fly the 220-kilogram passenger to the United States, dpa reported.

But rescue came in the form of the air force of the Caribbean country, which agreed to return Dominique Lanoise Thursday on board a military plane to the US, where she has lived for four years, local media reported Tuesday.

Lanoise, a naturalized US citizen, told the press that she flew to Haiti, the Dominican Republic's neighbour on the island of Hispaniola, in November on board a private plane. Since then, she has been sitting in a wheelchair after injuring her leg upon her arrival.

The newspaper El Diario Libre reported that she travelled from Haiti to Santo Domingo on a bed loaded in the back of a truck.

Lanoise said she has seven children in Miami but no relatives in Haiti after they were killed in the January 12 earthquake there.
