A suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle near a district governor's convoy in southern Afghanistan Monday, killing five children and injuring another, officials said.

Ahmadullah Nazik, the district governor for Dand in the southern province of Kandahar, was unharmed in the attack, a spokesman said, DPA reported.

"Five innocent children were killed and one man was injured in the attack," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Nazik's vehicle was damaged in the blast and his driver was injured, the officials said.

Taliban militants took responsibility for the attack in a statement posted at their website. It said the governor was the target, but provided no further details.

Nearly 270 Afghan civilians were killed and 588 were injured in the war in July, according to the ministry.
