Disease not cause of mass bird deaths in Swedish town

The recent mass death of a flock of birds in a small Swedish town was not caused by disease or infection, the National Veterinary Institute said Thursday.

The institute had begun an investigation after more than 50 dead jackdaws were found on a street in the south-western town of Falkoping late Tuesday evening, DPA reported.

Autopsies performed on five birds suggested they had died of massive internal bleeding, likely caused by some form of physical violence, the institute's Marianne Elvander said.

Bird experts said the jackdaws were likely in poor condition due to the tough winter. The flock could have been scared while resting for the night, and the frightened, disoriented birds flew into some nearby buildings or a passing vehicle.

A few days ago, several thousand dead birds were found in the US state of Arkansas. One theory was that those birds had been shocked by New Year fireworks.
