A foreign soldier was killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan Thursday while Afghan and foreign troops killed 12 Taliban militants elsewhere in the country, officials said, DPA reported.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said one of its soldiers died after an insurgent attack. It did not reveal the deceased's nationality or the exact location of the incident.

At least 45 foreign soldiers have been killed so far this year in Afghanistan. More than 700 died last year, the deadliest for the ISAF in the nine-year war.

Nine Taliban fighters were killed and more than a dozen were injured Wednesday night when Afghan forces backed by ISAF troops fought with a group of insurgents in the northern province of Jawzjan, said Abdul Aziz Ghairat, the provincial police chief.

No Afghan or foreign soldiers were injured in the operation in the Khosh Tapa district, he said.

In the south-eastern province of Khost, an insurgent leader and two of his associates were killed Wednesday in a coalition airstrike in the Terayzai district, the ISAF said Thursday.
