Karzai slams Afghan Taliban and Pakistan for failing peace efforts

Afghanistan's appeal for peace has not been met by a positive answer by the insurgency, President Hamid Karzai said Monday in a national televised address, DPA reported.

"We have always been trying to bring peace to Afghanistan by all means. But the Taliban and their supporters answered with assassinations and killings," Karzai said.

"Only one side cannot bring peace. Peace is possible with those who trust and believe in peace."

"We started a good-will effort for peace through dialogue but the enemy of peace and security and terror networks, with ties to foreign countries, keep on committing violence and assassinations," Karzai said.

The Taliban have been fighting Afghan and international forces since their ouster in 2001. Their attacks have become more complex and coordinated in recent months, and have included the assassinations of high-profile figures.

Since March alone, three top police officials, a mayor, a presidential adviser, a former president and Karzai's own brother have all been killed by the insurgents.

And three high-profile attacks in Kabul, including the ones on the fortified US Embassy and NATO headquarters, have shown how difficult it is to ensure security in the country.

In his televised speech, the Afghan president also slammed Pakistan for not doing enough to solve the crisis across the border.

"I have repeatedly said that terrorism is not only a disaster for Afghanistan but Pakistan would suffer too," Karzai warned, adding both should work as brothers.
