Russia would not support a resolution condemning Syria as a result of a United Nations human rights debate in Geneva, Moscow's representative suggested Monday, DPA reported.
The Arab League had asked for a special session to take place as part of the United Nations Human Rights Council conference. The session, which was due to take place on Tuesday, aims to call on Syria to allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians, according to diplomats.
But after delaying proceedings for several hours Monday, Russia's representative called for a "depoliticized" debate.
"And we continue to believe that summing up the results of this meeting in the form of any sort of written document would not be useful and it would be counterproductive," she said.
Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier this month.
Human Rights Council president Laura Lasserre Dupuy said it was important for the Syria session to go ahead.
"The humanitarian situation is critical," the Uruguayan diplomat said.
