At least five people were killed Thursday and three injured in a roadside explosion in Pakistan's north-west, police said, DPA reported.

The incident took place when a police van on routine patrol hit an improvised explosive device planted on the roadside in the Turghar area of Mansehra district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

"Five people, including a child and a policeman, were killed on the spot," Tahir Khan, a police official, told dpa. "While three policemen got injuries and (are) shifting to the medical facility."

No one claimed responsibility, but Taliban militants often carry our such attacks against law enforcement agencies.

Pakistan has launched several actions against Islamic rebels, but the insurgents are still active in various parts of the country and frequently target civilians and security forces.
