Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras fainted Friday while speaking to a conservative congress, news reports said, dpa reported.

According to a statement from the prime ministers office, Samaras had been suffering from viral gastroenteritis for most of the last week.

News reports said he was in the middle of a speech during a meeting of the conservative New Democracy party when he suddenly halted in mid-sentence, asking to sitting down for two minutes.

"The virus disease, in conjunction with an overloaded programme, resulted in the prime minister temporary not feeling well at the New Democracy congress," his office said. "The prime minister interrupted his speech for a few minutes, and after he completed it he returned home."
