The prototype of the laser weapon to be produced in Turkey is ready, Vatan newspaper reported on Jan.19.
The proposal to create a laser weapon was put forward by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey in May 2013. Turkish navy will be equipped with these weapons.
Reportedly, Turkish government has allocated 120 million TRY to produce a laser weapon.
Turkish military-industrial company - Aselsan - and the Scientific and Technological Research Council are working on the creation of the weapon.
The project was approved by Turkey's Defense Industry Ministry.
The work within the project will last for six years. Two models of the laser weapon will be created at the first stage. The weapon will be tested in the Black Sea.
Earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the country will strengthen its defense industry. "Turkey will turn into a strong world power."
He said that Turkey did much for the development of the defense industry in the past years.
Earlier, Turkish Minister for Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Isik also said that the country intends to develop its defense industry.
The minister added that Turkey should be fully independent in the defense industry sphere.
Turkey's defense industry has focused on developing and manufacturing its own products in recent years. The country succeeded to reach 54-percent self-sufficiency in defense industry sphere.
