European Union welcomes Turkish foreign minister’s candidature

( Cihan ) - Deputy Turkish Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy for the president has been welcomed by many circles around the European Union.

Spokesmen for the Socialist Group in the European Parliament said that Gul's candidacy was satisfactory and to the interest of Turkish- EU relations as he was an important figure in Turkey's EU accession.

Joost Lagendijk, co-chairman of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, characterized Gul's candidature as a "righteous and wise choice" and said that Gul was a name on Turkish political scene foreigners knew best.

Claudia Roth, the co-chairman of German Greens said that they welcomed Turkey's ruling the Justice and Development Party's wise tactics and that Gul had a strong personality.

"Despite being a conservative politician, Gul has always represented Turkey as and open, moderate and liberal country," Roth added.
