New biometric identity cards to be issued in Turkey

The new biometric identity cards will be issued to Turkish citizens from December 2014, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted Oct. 16 by the Turkish news agency Anadolu.

The cards will include the data about their owners.

They will also allow Turkish citizens to carry out a number of transactions, such as paying for various services, withdraw cash at ATMs and to use e-signatures.

Moreover, while presenting a new biometric identity card to a police officer, a Turkish citizen will be able to testify at the scene, rather than at a police station.

A citizen will also be able to change the surname without appealing to the court by using a biometric identity card. The details of this innovation were not disclosed.
