Payment card market in Azerbaijan increases by over 10 percent over the year

The number of payment cards in Azerbaijan increased by 1.61 percent in September - to 4.82 million units, and increased by 10.34 percent compared to the same period of last year, the Azerbaijani Central Bank (CBA) said today.

The number of payment cards in Azerbaijan increased by 1.61 percent in September - to 4.82 million units, and increased by 10.34 percent compared to the same period of last year, the Azerbaijani Central Bank (CBA) said today.

Total turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS-terminals in September amounted to 734 million manat, and the total number of operations - 4.69 million units.

The number of debit card transactions totaled 4.663 million units worth 636 million manat.

Some 3.887 million transactions amounting to 581 million manat of the total number of debit card transactions were carried through the ATM, 304,000 transactions amounting to 42 million manat - through POS-terminals.

Some 359,000 transactions totaling 99 million manat were carried out through credit cards in September 2012.

Some 132,000 operations worth 39 million manat were carried out through the ATM, 70,000 operations at 18 million manat - through the POS terminals.

As of Oct. 1, 2012, the country had 2,224 ATMs, including 1,224 ATMs in Baku, 1,000 - in other cities and regions. The total number increased by 168 units, or 8.17 percent for the year.

On Oct. 1, 2012 the number of POS-terminals totaled 36,702 units, of which 33,549 account for Baku, and 3,153 for other cities and regions.

Their number increased by 24,498 units, or by 3 times since September 2011.

The official exchange rate on Nov. 20 is 0.7848 AZN/USD.
