By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijani Embassy in Spain is examining the situation in the light of adoption of a resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh by the parliament of the Basque Country, an autonomous community in northern Spain.

"The media reports on the adoption of a resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh by the Basque Country's parliament is not quite accurate, it is not clear in what wording it was adopted, whether it recognizes the self-determination or independence right of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic or not. The embassy is working on this issue," Azerbaijani Ambassador to Spain Altay Afandiyev told Trend Sept. 15.

Azerbaijani embassy is working with the government and parliament of the Basque Country, as well as with the Spanish Foreign Ministry, to clarify the situation.

The Basque parliament adopted on Sept. 12 a resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
